Readings: Exodus 12: 1-14, 29-36, 50-51
The Israelites were still in Egypt. God had sent nine terrible plagues or punishments. During each plague, Pharaoh promised to let the slaves go free. But as soon as God removed the plague, he changed his mind. God was now going to send one final plague. For the Egyptians, it would be the most dreadful of all, but for the Israelites, it would give deliverance.
Lesson 2: The Red Sea
Readings: Exodus 13: 20-22; 14: 5-14, 19-31
If you were going on a long car journey to somewhere you didn’t know very well, the driver would probably need some help to find the way. God had brought the Israelites out of Egypt and was now leading them to a new country of their own, the Promised Land.
Lesson 3: The Difficult Journey
Readings: Exodus 17: 1-16
The Israelites had had a wonderful experience of God at the beginning of their journey. They had proved that they had a powerful God who would not leave them in time of difficulty.
Lesson 4: The Bronze Snake
Readings: Numbers 21: 4-9; John 3: 1, 2, 14-16
Almost forty years later, the people were still wandering in the desert. The first time they had come near the Promised Land, they did not trust God to bring them into it, so God sent them back to wander in the desert as a punishment. Now a new generation of Israelite children had grown up. Sadly, they were still complaining against God.
