Readings: Jonah 1: 1-9
Jonah served God as a prophet, telling people what God said. One day God told Jonah to go to a big city called Nineveh. There, he was to warn the wicked people about God’s punishment, because God had seen their sins.
Lesson 2: Jonah in the Sea
Readings: Jonah 1: 10-17; 2: 1-10
As the storm grew worse, the sailors asked Jonah what could be done to stop it. “Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied. When the sailors did this, the storm ended immediately. Jonah sank, deeper and deeper, but God had prepared a big fish to swallow him. For three days and three nights Jonah was inside the fish.
Lesson 3: Jonah preaches in Nineveh
Readings: Jonah 3: 1-10
God spoke to the fish and it spat Jonah out on dry land! Then God told Jonah again to go to Nineveh. This time Jonah obeyed! When he reached the wicked city he preached God’s message.
Lesson 4: Jonah prays to God
Readings: Jonah 4: 1-11
Jonah was angry with God for not punishing the people of Nineveh. When he prayed to God he said, “I know that You are a loving, merciful God.”
