King Saul was so jealous of David that he tried to kill him. David had to hide to be safe. David’s best friend was Jonathan, King Saul’s son. Jonathan was able to warn David of his danger. Sometimes David and Jonathan would meet secretly, and have a talk about Saul’s wicked plans.
Lesson 2: David spares Saul
Readings: 1 Samuel 24: 1-22
King Saul and his men kept hunting David from place to place. One time, David hid inside a big cave. While he was there, in came King Saul! It was very dark and quiet.
Lesson 3: David becomes King
Readings: 1 Samuel 31: 1-16, 2 Samuel 5: 1-5
King Saul died in a terrible war with the Philistines. Not only did the king die, but also three of his sons. One of them was Jonathan, David’s best friend.
Lesson 4: David and Mephibosheth
Readings: 2 Samuel 9: 1-13
When Jonathan died, he had a little boy who was just five years old. His name was Mephibosheth. On the very day his father was killed, Mephibosheth had a bad accident. His feet were injured, and he was lame for the rest of his life.
